Cort took the boys to tryouts last Saturday. The coaches watched as the kids ran to first base, hit three balls off the tee, and fielded three balls and threw them back to a coach. Cort said both boys did great. Three good hits from both of them. When they fielded, Joseph stopped all three balls but Charlie missed one. I'm not sure if he was upset that he missed it initially, but by the time I heard the story he was pretty proud, because of course he ran after it and then he threw it all the way in from where he was, which Cort said was clearly noted by the coaches.
We've got a friend who is coaching another team, so we got an email giving us the inside scoop on the draft. The boys were both taken in the first round!! Specifically, they were taken (as a pair) with the tenth pick overall. Out of over 100 players!! I'm always just so amazed when I find out that children with half of my genes can play a sport.
The team that chose them is the Timber Rattlers (named for a Brewers minor league team). Cort's been calling them the T-Rats. It's a new team, so they may actually end up being the best players on the team, which could potentially be tough in this league. (Players who played last year can remain on their old team without trying out, so there will be some experienced teams out there.) The boys don't know anyone else on the team, but I think they'll be fine. We haven't met the coach yet. Practices start this weekend, and I'm hoping the practices won't be too frequent. But these boys just love sports, so I think we've made the right decision in moving up to the "next level" with Timbergrove. So happy baseball season is here.
